Ciena's CN 3600™ Intelligent Optical Multiservice Switch family is the first
solution to fully integrate the functionality of a next generation SONET/SDH Add/Drop
Multiplexer (ADM), Digital Cross-Connect (DCS), and Ethernet services platform in one
carrier-class system. The CN 3600 delivers OC-3 to OC-192 SONET, DS1, DS3/EC-1, equivalent
SDH services as well as Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet services with scalable broadband
and wideband switching fabrics for DSC applications.
The CN 3600’s modular, distributed switching architecture on each service card enables
dramatic scalability advantages and cost savings over traditional solutions that require
a full switching matrix for the initial service. Its ability to perform both low order and
high order grooming provides savings up to 50% in equipment, 70% in power, and 80% in space
utilization over multi-platform DCS and ADM aggregation solutions. When deployed as a
distributed ADM+DCS in the metro, the CN 3600 pre-grooms local traffic, eliminating the
need to backhaul local low order traffic to the central office. This optimizes metro ring
bandwidth as well as offloads DCS ports at the main hub. Integrated test access along with
bridge and roll capability enables simplified remote management and hitless service changes.
The CN 3600 maintains industry leading support for both SONET and SDH from T1/E1 to OC-192/STM-64.
